Semiconductor Facilities in Penang and Kulim

T&H Steel: Precision Crafted, Industry Driven.

The problem

On a semiconductor facility in Penang or Kulim, the fabricated parts are rarely the equipment itself. They are the brackets, enclosures, gas and fluid line supports, frames and fixtures that have to be on the floor when the tool, the duct run or the service corridor is ready. Facility, M&E and equipment-vendor teams work to an install window that does not move because a support is still at sea or still waiting on a drawing revision.

What an imported part actually costs

A part sourced from outside Malaysia does not only add freight. It adds customs handling, a longer revision loop when the first article is wrong, and idle time on site while installers wait. If the drawing changes after the part has left the overseas workshop, the delay is no longer a quotation problem. It is a programme problem.

A local workshop removes that transit and customs step, provided it can hold the tolerance and finish the job needs. A cheap local quote that assumes a grade, skips a finish or sends the weld to a second shop often costs more than the import it was meant to replace.

Where local quotes usually fail

The gaps we see most often are practical, not theoretical:

  • Material grade is not stated, or 304 is assumed where the environment needs 316/316L.
  • Finish is described as “brushed” with no Ra value, then rejected at incoming inspection.
  • Hole patterns and bend deductions are taken from a first-pass drawing, then the revision arrives after the sheet is already cut.
  • Cutting, forming, welding and finishing sit in different shops, so nobody owns the part when it comes back out of tolerance.

What we need before a quote is useful

Send the drawing or a dimensioned sketch, the stainless grade, the finish or Ra if it is specified, the quantity, and the environment the part sits in — process-adjacent, utility side, or washdown. If a particular standard applies, name it. We will confirm whether we can meet it before you commit. We do not claim a standard we do not hold, and we will not invent a cleanroom class for furniture or fixtures that simply need to be compatible with that setting.

What we fabricate for this sector

TH Steel's in-house sequence — cutting, forming, welding and finishing — supports the component types semiconductor facilities specify most often. Each item below is work we actually take on, not a catalogue of every part in a fab.

  • Equipment frames and enclosures — rigid stainless structures around tools, panels and service access, where square and repeatable matter more than decorative finish.
  • Mounting brackets and support structures — one-off or small-batch brackets that have to match an existing hole pattern or a site-measured condition.
  • Gas and fluid line brackets and supports — clamps and carriers that hold pipe or tube on a set spacing without crushing or marking the line.
  • Cleanroom-compatible furniture and fixtures — tables, frames and fixtures specified for a controlled area. Tell us the finish and any surface-roughness limit; we will not claim a cleanroom class we do not certify.
  • Ducting and structural panels — stainless panels and duct pieces cut, formed and welded in-house so a revision does not bounce between three suppliers.
  • Jigs, fixtures and tooling aids — workshop aids for assembly or inspection, usually low volume and needed quickly.

Those parts typically move through CNC laser cutting or water jet cutting, then welding, plate or tube bending, and finishing under one roof.

Materials, finish and tolerance

We work primarily in 304 and 316/316L stainless steel. 304 is the usual choice for general indoor supports and frames. 316/316L is the better starting point where chlorides, washdown or a more aggressive environment are in play. If you are unsure, tell us where the part sits and we will say which grade we would quote, rather than defaulting to the cheaper sheet.

Finishes run from mill to fine brushed. Where a drawing states a surface roughness, we work to that Ra value in µm. “Brushed” on its own is not a specification — if incoming inspection will measure it, put the number on the enquiry.

If a particular standard or customer specification applies, name it on the drawing pack. We will confirm whether we can meet it before you place an order. We do not claim a certification we do not hold.

How a drawing moves through the workshop

  1. Drawing in. Send a CAD file, PDF or a dimensioned sketch with grade, finish and quantity.
  2. Questions back. We flag missing grade, finish, environment or revision status before the quote, not after the first cut.
  3. Quote. A price and a realistic timeline against current workshop load — not a generic lead time that will not hold.
  4. Fabricate. Cutting, forming, welding and finishing stay in-house in Bayan Lepas.
  5. Check and despatch. Dimensional check against the drawing, then collection or delivery as agreed.

Why a local, in-house fabricator

TH Steel has operated from Bayan Lepas Industrial Park, Penang since 1977, close to the semiconductor manufacturing cluster across Penang and Kulim. A drawing that stays in one workshop has fewer handoffs — the usual place delay and rework start — than a job split between a cutter, a former and a welder.

If it helps to see the equipment and the floor before you commit a first order, you are welcome to visit. That is often the fastest way to judge whether we are a fit for a repeat bracket or a one-off enclosure.

Frequently asked questions

Send your drawing or CAD file with material grade, finish and quantity. If you do not have a formal drawing yet, a sketch with key dimensions and the operating environment is enough for us to scope the work and come back with questions. Missing finish, quantity or grade is the usual reason a first quote is vague.

In many cases, yes. Send a photo, the key dimensions, and the environment the part sits in. We will confirm whether we can reproduce it before you commit to an order, and tell you if a sample or a site measure would make the quote safer.

Lead time depends on complexity, quantity, material availability and current workshop load. Send your drawing and we will confirm a realistic timeline before you order, rather than quoting a generic figure that will not hold once the job is in the queue.

Yes. One-off and low-volume work sits alongside production runs in our workshop. That is often the type of job a larger supplier turns away, and it is a practical way to qualify us before a repeat order.

304 and 316/316L are the two grades most facility components use, in finishes from mill to fine brushed. Tell us the environment and any surface-roughness requirement. If a named standard applies, we will confirm whether we can meet it rather than implying that we already hold it.
