Stainless Steel Fabrication for Architecture and Interior Design

T&H Steel: Precision Crafted, Industry Driven.

When the metalwork is part of the design

Architectural and interior metalwork is judged by eye. A visible weld seam, a baluster slightly out of line, an inconsistent brushed grain or a joint that catches the light the wrong way is noticed at once, and it reflects on the designer and the finished space. The same piece often has to survive daily public use as well, so it cannot be only decorative.Architectural and interior work therefore has to pass two tests at the same time: it has to look right, and it has to perform once installed. The harder part is usually the journey in between, keeping the design intent intact as a drawing becomes a manufactured, installable piece.The buyer in this sector needs a fabricator who treats the finish as part of the product, not as an afterthought.

What architects and designers need

Architects, interior designers, contractors and developers tend to be solving for the same concerns:
  • a finish that is consistent, clean and right for the setting;
  • accurate alignment and fit, so installed work looks deliberate;
  • design intent translated into metalwork that is practical to manufacture and install;
  • durability under public use, cleaning, weather and exposure;
  • coordination with drawings, site dimensions and the wider design;
  • the option to see a sample or first piece before committing a full run.
The underlying need is confidence that what was drawn is what will be installed, and that it will still look right in years to come.

How TH Steel supports the requirement

TH Steel, established 1977 and based in Penang, combines the processes architectural stainless steel fabrication relies on, with stainless steel fabrication handled in-house from cut part to finished piece:
  • CNC laser cutting for accurate profiles, perforations and decorative cut-outs in sheet and plate.
  • Tube bending for handrails, frames and curved feature work without flattening or distortion.
  • Plate bending and forming for panels, fascias and shaped sections.
  • Precision welding using TIG (GTAW), with welds dressed and blended for visible work.
  • Finishing and polishing to a consistent grain or mirror, with weld blending and passivation for exposed and exterior pieces.
  • Project assembly to deliver finished, installable items rather than loose parts.
Because cutting, bending, welding and finishing happen together, the finish can be controlled across the whole piece rather than negotiated between separate suppliers.

Typical fabricated items

Common architecture and interior work includes:
  • balustrades, handrails and feature staircases;
  • decorative screens, partitions and room dividers;
  • facade, fascia and cladding panels;
  • canopies, entrance features and external metalwork;
  • reception counters, bar fronts and feature furniture;
  • shopfitting, display units and shelving;
  • signage supports and lettering backings;
  • bespoke feature metalwork to a designer's drawings.

Materials, grades, finishes and standards

Grade selection follows the setting:
  • 304, the general-purpose austenitic grade, suitable for most indoor and sheltered architectural work.
  • 316 / 316L, molybdenum-bearing, with better resistance to chlorides and salt air, preferred for exterior, coastal and exposed pieces. The low-carbon 316L variant suits welded work where corrosion resistance at the weld matters.
On visible work the finish is the product. Common choices are brushed No. 4, the workhorse for architectural and interior pieces, and mirror No. 8 for feature elements, with bead-blasted and other finishes available. Consistent grain direction across adjoining parts, dressed and blended welds, and post-weld passivation on exterior pieces all matter to the final look and to durability.

Why an integrated fabrication partner protects the design

On visible work, the finish is only as good as the weakest link in the chain. When cutting, bending, welding and finishing all happen under one roof, grain direction, weld blending and alignment can be controlled across the whole piece, and there are fewer handoffs where the design intent can get lost or the finish can vary between parts. For architects and designers, that means one accountable partner from drawing through to finished, installable metalwork, and the option to approve a sample or first piece before the full run is made.

Frequently asked questions - architecture and interior design

As a rule, 304 suits indoor and sheltered work, while 316 is the safer choice outdoors and the standard choice near the coast, near pools or anywhere with salt or chlorides. Both grades look the same; the difference is corrosion resistance, as 316 contains molybdenum that 304 does not. Tell us where the piece will be installed and how exposed it is, and we will recommend a grade.

Those brown marks are usually tea staining, a surface discolouration rather than structural rust, and they are more common on 304 in exposed or coastal settings. The marks do not eat into the metal, and routine cleaning keeps them at bay, but on minimalist designs where every mark shows, specifying 316 and a suitable finish reduces the risk. We can advise on grade and finish for the setting.

No. 4 is a brushed satin finish with a fine directional grain, the usual choice for handrails, panels and most architectural work because it hides marks and wears well. No. 8 is a reflective mirror finish used for feature elements where a bright surface is wanted, though it shows fingerprints and scratches more readily. Bead-blasted and other finishes are also available, so tell us the look you are after.

In most cases yes, provided we know the grade, the finish family (for example brushed No. 4) and, where it matters, the grain direction. Matching is easier when a sample or the finish schedule is supplied. Send a sample or the specification and we will confirm what we can match.

Yes. Working from drawings and specifications is the usual route, and we can also work from sketches, a concept or a sample where a full drawing is not yet available. The more detail you provide on dimensions, finish and the intended setting, the more accurately we can advise and quote.

On visible work, welds are dressed and blended back into the surface so the joint is discreet, and the finish is then worked across the whole piece for consistency. On exterior pieces, post-weld passivation also helps protect the weld area. Tell us which faces are visible so the welds and finish can be planned accordingly.

Stainless steel is low-maintenance but not maintenance-free; a periodic wash with mild soap and water, and a thorough clean after installation, keeps the surface bright. In coastal or polluted settings, more frequent cleaning helps prevent tea staining. We can suggest a grade and finish that suit the cleaning the piece will realistically receive.

Yes. For finish-critical or repeated work, a sample or first piece can be agreed and approved before the full run is made, which removes surprises on finish and fit. Let us know if a sample is needed and we will build it into the plan.

TH Steel is a fabrication partner: the work is fabricated, finished and prepared for installation to your drawings, and we are glad to discuss site dimensions and fixing details so installation goes smoothly. Tell us your site and installation requirements and we will advise on how best to prepare the metalwork.
